Graduate Travel Support for Non-Academic Professional Conferences

The Institute of European Studies is pleased to announce a competition for travel grants for UC Berkeley graduate students in European Studies to support professional development in non-academic career paths. Funds may be used to defray travel and hotel costs associated with attending a professional conference in a sector outside of academia.

Pinto-Fialon Scholarships and Fellowships (Graduate and Undergraduate)

With the support of the Pinto-Fialon Fund, the Center for Portuguese Studies offers fellowships to doctoral students embarking on dissertations focused on Portugal, and administers scholarships to undergraduate students of Portuguese descent.

Eligibility: The Pinto/Fialon Scholarships (undergraduate) and Fellowships (graduate) are open to Portuguese-American and Portuguese students at UC Berkeley (Portuguese-American students are defined as having at least one Portuguese grandparent).

The UC Berkeley Institute of European Studies and the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation are pleased to announce the Berkeley-Austria Research Fellowship for 3 months of research in the Humanities and Social Sciences at any Austrian university.

Successful applicants will receive a temporary affiliation with the host institution in Austria. Applicants must be registered students at a University of California campus.

Gerald D. and Norma Feldman Graduate Dissertation Fellowship

To honor the memory of History Professor Gerald D. Feldman — particularly his dedication to graduate students — the Institute for European Studies has established the Gerald D. and Norma Feldman Graduate Student Dissertation Fellowship.

Helmut Kohl Award in German and European Studies

In 1991, German Chancellor Helmut Kohl personally inaugurated the Center for German and European Studies at UC Berkeley, gave the convocation address and received the Berkeley Medal. This event underscored the importance of European Studies on the West Coast and laid the foundation for today’s Institute of European Studies.

As a tribute to the late Chancellor, IES established the Helmut Kohl Award in support of Berkeley graduate students enrolled in the Designated Emphasis in European Studies.
