Berkeley-Uppsala Research Fellowship

The partnership between the UC Berkeley and Uppsala University, Sweden, was established in 2018. Both universities are now seeking to intensify their collaboration, and Uppsala University is pleased to announce two scholarships for Berkeley graduate students wishing to do research in Uppsala.

Founded in 1477, Uppsala University is Sweden’s oldest university. As such, the university have a long history and rich traditions. But first and foremost it is a modern, broad and dynamic research university with a clear threefold mission to conduct first-class research, provide education of the highest quality and interact with society. Uppsala University has an excellent international standing and is determined to maintain the highest academic standards, yet the ultimate goal is to contribute to changing the world for the better. To achieve this, the University both cherishes its academic freedom and independence as an academic institution, and fosters and develops active collaboration and interaction with society. The University is characterized by internationalization, diversity and breadth. Its research and education spans nine Schools in three broad domains – Science and Technology, Medicine and Pharmacy, and Humanities and Social Sciences.

The scholarship has a duration of up to three months maximum (shorter stays are possible). Students will need to organize their own accommodations in Uppsala. 

This grant can be combined with other IES grants. 

PLEASE NOTE: Grant recipients are expected to complete their research stay in residence at the designated partner university during the calendar year they applied for (not the end of the school year).

Award amount: The fellowship offered by Uppsala University is EUR 1,500/month (up to 3 months) and will be paid to the Berkeley student upon arrival in Uppsala.

Eligibility: Open to UC Berkeley graduate students in all fields. In the selection of the candidates, preference is given to Berkeley students who can demonstrate in their application that they already have a faculty contact at Uppsala University.

Application Instructions

Applicants must submit the following materials:

  1. A one-page application letter, including a 100-word (max.) abstract of your research and indication of the duration of your stay
  2. A further research statement of approximately 1,500 words
  3. One letter of recommendation from a UC Berkeley faculty member; this letter should be sent to ies@berkeley.edu
  4. One short confirmation letter (or e-mail) from a research supervisor at the University of Uppsala, indicating the duration of your stay 
  5. A short CV (max. 2 pages)
