Portuguese Language Course Grant for Graduate Students

The Center for Portuguese Studies is pleased to announce a competitive graduate student grant for participation in the SiPN Portuguese Language Program in Lisbon, Portugal, during the Summer semester. The SiPN summer program offers an immersive language and cultural experience.This grant will support five UC Berkeley graduate students from all departments by covering round-trip international airfare, full program tuition, fees, and housing in Lisbon for the duration of the program. Preference will be given to students without prior knowledge of the Portuguese language. Students can opt for one of two courses that FLAD’s SiPN offers:

  • Option 1: Portuguese Language for Foreigners 

    • Location: Catholic University of Lisbon

    • Contact Hours: 60 | ECTS: 6 (~3 US credits)

  • Option 2: Intensive Portuguese Language for Foreigners 

    • Location: University of Lisbon

    • Contact Hours: 80 | ECTS: 12 (~6 US credits)

To apply, students must submit the following materials:

  • A statement of interest with explanation of how their research will benefit from knowledge of the Portuguese language (max. 2 pages)

  • A CV

Additionally, students muct have one academic reference from a UC Berkeley faculty member sent directly from the faculty member to csp@berkeley.edu

Award recipients will be asked to submit a brief report and one photo documenting their experience within one month of program completion for inclusion in the Center’s annual report.
