Berkeley-Portugal Research Fellowship

The UC Berkeley Institute of European Studies and its Center for Portuguese Studies are pleased to announce the Berkeley-Portugal Fellowship for research in all fields at any Portuguese university and/or Portuguese language study in Portugal. This fellowship is offered in cooperation with the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD). 

Applicants must be registered students at UC Berkeley for the entire duration of their stay in Portugal. Students will be expected to make their own travel and living arrangements and, in case of a language study program, pay the tuition costs. This grant can be combined with other IES grants.

PLEASE NOTE: Grant recipients are expected to complete their research stay in residence at the designated partner university during the calendar year they applied for. Students applying for financial support for language study are expected to enroll at a language study program in Portugal.

Award amount: $3,000

Eligibility: Open to graduate students in all fields. Students are required to demonstrate in their application to have a faculty research supervisor/contact at a Portuguese university or identify the language program they intend to enroll in. The Center for Portuguese Studies has an agreement with the Study in Portugal Network (SiPN) as the preferred program for language study in Portugal. Students applying to the Summer Language course organized by SiPN will be given preference over other programs. 

Application instructions: Students applying for this grant should submit the following materials:

  1. Letter of Motivation (500 words max.)
  2. Project description (2,000 words max.), including:
    • Title of Research Project
    • Supervisor at home university, Supervisor at host university
    • Short description of Research Agenda
  3. One letter of recommendation from a UC faculty member; letter should be sent to ies@berkeley.edu(link sends e-mail)
  4. Short curriculum vitae (2 pages max.)
  5. Confirmation letter (or copy of e-mail) from a research supervisor at a Portuguese university, confirming his/her interest in working with you during your stay in Portugal and with an indication of the duration of your stay
