Ana Hatherly Portuguese Writer/Artist in Residence Program

The Center for Portuguese Studies supports cooperation between UC Berkeley and Portugal by providing funding for the invitation of a writer or artist with residency in Portugal and whose work engages with Portuguese literature, culture, and/or art. Funding can be requested by UC Berkeley faculty members from all departments and all disciplines. This Program honors Ana Hatherly (1929-2015), a Portuguese academic, poet, visual artist, essayist, filmmaker, painter, and writer, who obtained a doctoral degree from UC Berkeley. Hatherly was considered one of the pioneers of the experimental poetry and experimental literature movement in Portugal.

UC Berkeley faculty who wish to apply for funding to invite a writer or artist are required to submit a one-page application letter describing the intent of the visit and the duration of the guest’s intended stay, as well as a two-page CV of the guest, confirming that the latter has residency in Portugal and that the guest will give at least one public lecture/performance dealing with Portuguese literature, culture and/or art.  Upon approval by the CPS Faculty Director, CPS will provide up to $5,000 dollars for costs associated with the visit. UC Berkeley faculty can invite only one writer or artist per academic year. Within one month of the visit, awardees must submit a photo from the event and a 200-word (minimum) report detailing their experience to csp@berkeley.edu(link sends e-mail) for inclusion in our annual report.
