National Resource Center

The Institute of European Studies is designated a National Resource Center (NRC) supported by the U.S. Department of Education under the auspices of Title VI of the Higher Education Act of 1965. As a National Resource Center, the Institute is widely recognized as one of the country's premier sources for research and education on Europe and its constitutive regions. IES works to strengthen access and training in major and less commonly taught West European languages, to sponsor outreach activities for K-14 educators, and to enhance European area studies training across all disciplines.

In addition to IES, Berkeley is also home to six other National Resource Centers, covering Latin America, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Middle Eastern, South Asia, Africa, and Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS)

As part of the Title VI program, IES receives Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) funding to support graduate and undergraduate students studying West European languages.

Library Support

IES supports the work of UC Berkeley Library subject specialists to enhance European collections, particularly those related to less commonly taught languages (LCTLs). IES provides special funding to finance the purchase of materials written in a European LCTL and published in Europe that are currently not available on the Berkeley campus.

For more information on European collections at the UC Berkeley Library, please contact our subject specialists:

To request materials, students and faculty may fill out the Library Recommendation Form and mention “IES LCTL Support” in the Comments section.
