Berkeley-Hasselt Research Fellowship

IES is pleased to announce a study and research opportunity for UC Berkeley graduate students in all fields, offered by Hasselt University in Belgium.

Hasselt University is an independent innovative Belgian university which is regionally anchored and has a pronounced international orientation. The university stands for excellence in education, top research in spearhead fields and active engagement in innovation and entrepreneurship. Hasselt University targets students with attractive undergraduate, graduate and PhD programmes which are research-led and characterised by a high academic level and the integration of lifelong employability skills. University research policy is directed at top research in spearhead fields in a number of domains (electronic materials, ICT, life sciences, clean tech, biostatistics, traffic safety and mobility, open innovation and small businesses). In those multidisciplinary domains, the research institutes of Hasselt University combine fundamental and applied research, including contract research for regional and international industry and organizations.

PLEASE NOTE: Grant recipients are expected to complete their research stay in residence at the designated partner university during the calendar year they applied for (not the end of the school year).

Award amount: This program offers a monthly grant of €1,000, paid upon arrival in Belgium. Students can apply for a stay of up to 3 months.

Eligibility: Applicant must be a degree-seeking student at UC Berkeley during the application process and must remain enrolled during the entire study period in Hasselt.

Applicants must provide an invitation letter by a faculty host at Hasselt University. UC Berkeley applicants and their host in Hasselt must have agreed on the research activities to be undertaken prior to the start of the mobility period. 

Application Instructions

Applicants must submit the following required materials:

  1. A one-page cover letter, including a 100-word (max) abstract of your research and indication of the duration of your stay
  2. A research statement of approximately 1,500 words
  3. One letter of recommendation from a UC Berkeley faculty member; this letter should be sent to ies@berkeley.edu
  4. One invitation letter from a faculty member at Hasselt University, indicating the duration of your stay 
  5. A short CV (max 2 pages)
