The partnership between UC Berkeley and the University of Regensburg, Germany, was established in 2017. Both universities are now seeking to intensify their collaboration, and the University of Regensburg is pleased to announce a scholarship opportunity for Berkeley graduate students in the humanities and social sciences wishing to explore dissertation research opportunities in or from Regensburg. We welcome applications in the following fields: humanities, social and political science, economics, pedagogy/education, and law.

The University of Regensburg, founded in 1962 as the fourth Bavarian state university, is a modern campus university with 21,000 students located at the southern edge of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Regensburg. It covers the full disciplinary spectrum of the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Life Sciences. Among its special areas of concentration in research and teaching, transnational area studies hold a particularly prominent position. The Center for International and Transnational Area Studies (CITAS) coordinates several multi- and interdisciplinary centers and platforms focusing on European Studies, Southeast and East European Studies, Bohemian Studies, European-American Studies, and Spanish Studies. In 2017, the Institute of East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) became a Leibniz Institute. The university’s excellent library facilities include the Electronic Journals Library and special holdings in the above mentioned fields of transnational area studies.

The scholarship has a duration of up to three months.

This grant can be combined with other IES grants.

PLEASE NOTE: Grant recipients are expected to complete their research stay in residence at the designated partner university during the calendar year they applied for (not the end of the school year).

Award amount: The fellowship offered by the University of Regensburg is EUR 1,000/month and will be paid to the student upon arrival in Regensburg.
