Berkeley-Muenster Research Fellowship

The partnership between the UC Berkeley and University of Muenster , Germany, was established in 2018. Both universities are now seeking to intensify their collaboration in Arts and Social Sciences, and Muenster University is pleased to announce an Erasmus+ scholarship for a Berkeley graduate student wishing to do research in Muenster.

The University of Münster is one of the largest universities in Germany with a rich and time-honoured tradition. Fifteen faculties with 120 degree programs and 30 research centers comprise the institutional backbone of the University. Some 54,000 students and 5,700 academics appreciate the University's excellent research opportunities, high-quality teaching, promotion of junior researchers, and the advantages of living in the beautiful city of Muenster. The university's slogan sums it up best: "living.knowledge."

The hosting institution in Muenster is the smartNETWORK , which connects eight Graduate Schools and four Research Groups of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Network creates an interdisciplinary and international environment, including academic and social support.

Award amount: This program covers a contribution to travel costs of up to €1.500 and a monthly allowance of €850, paid upon arrival. Additional social top –up of 200€ for mobility with child or mobility for students with health impairment. Students can apply for a minimum stay of 3 months and up to 6 months. As an enrolled doctoral student an addition social contribution fee of approx. 300€ may apply.

Eligibility: Applicant must be a degree-seeking PhD student at UC Berkeley during the application process and must remain enrolled during the entire study period in Muenster. All UC Berkeley doctoral students, regardless of their nationality and field of study, can apply. Applicants must provide an invitation letter by a Muenster faculty host. UC Berkeley applicants and their Muenster host must have agreed on the research activities to be undertaken prior to the start of the mobility period. 

Application Instructions: Applicants must submit the following required materials:

  1. A one-page cover letter, including a 100-word (max) abstract of your research and indication of the duration of your stay

  2. A research statement of approximately 1,500 words

  3. One letter of recommendation from a UC Berkeley faculty member; this letter should be sent to ies@berkeley.edu

  4. One invitation letter from a Muenster faculty member, indicating the duration of your stay 

  5. A short CV (max 2 pages)
