The partnership between UC Berkeley and Universität Hamburg, Germany, was established in 2000. Both universities are now seeking to intensify their collaboration, and Universität Hamburg is pleased to announce two scholarships for Berkeley graduate students wishing to do research in or from Hamburg.

The Hanseatic City of Hamburg is a beautiful, lively and diverse harbor city with approx. 1.7 million inhabitants in the north of Germany. Universität Hamburg is the leading comprehensive research and educational institution in northern Germany with currently more than 40.000 students enrolled. Based on its pledge to promote sustainable, open-minded science and scholarship, Universität Hamburg aims to further internationalize its research and teaching activities. This requires continuous ideas from the outside, lively exchange in global networks, and a campus community actively working toward diversity, equality, and integration.

Overall, Universität Hamburg’s profile encompasses a broad spectrum of research, including outstanding individual research achievements in single disciplines and cross-disciplinary research projects within the University’s key research areas. Key research areas are: Climate, Earth Environment (Research for a Sustainable Future); Health Economics (Research for a Sustainable Future); Infection Research and Structural Biology; Manuscript Research; Neurosciences; Particle, Astro and Mathematical Physics; Photons and Nanosciences.

The scholarship has a duration of up to three months maximum. Students will need to make their own travel and housing accommodations.

Students can combine this scholarship with other IES grants.

Please Note: Grant recipients are expected to complete their research stay in residence at the designated partner university during the calendar year they applied for (not the end of the school year).

Award amount: The fellowships offered by Universität Hamburg are EUR 1,000/month that will be paid to the two selected Berkeley students upon arrival in Hamburg.
