The partnership between the UC Berkeley and University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, was established in 2018. Both universities are now seeking to intensify their collaboration, and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is pleased to announce two scholarships for Berkeley graduate students from the Humanities and Social Sciences wishing to do research at the School of Humanities, Social Sciences & Theology at the Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU) in Erlangen-Nuremberg.
Founded in 1743, FAU today is one of the largest research universities in Germany, with a strong international orientation. Teaching at the University is closely linked to research and focuses on training students in both theory and practice to enable them to think critically and work independently. The School of Humanities, Social Sciences & Theology offers a comprehensive list of disciplines within the subject areas of Humanities and Social Sciences. Its research and teaching covers a wide selection of topics from various periods and areas which involve elements from the key concepts of culture, language and society. With around 50 different disciplines from the Humanities, Social Sciences, Economics, Education, and Theology, the School of Humanities, Social Sciences & Theology is a rich source of both historical and contemporary cultural knowledge.
The scholarship has a duration of up to three months maximum (shorter stays are possible). Students will need to organize their own flight but will be assisted in finding accommodation.
This grant can be combined with other IES grants.
PLEASE NOTE: Grant recipients are expected to complete their research stay in residence at the designated partner university during the calendar year they applied for (not the end of the school year).
Award amount: The fellowship offered by the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is EUR 1,000/month for a stay up to three months to be paid to the Berkeley student upon arrival in Erlangen.
Eligibility: Open to UC Berkeley graduate students from the Humanities and Social Sciences. In the selection of the candidates, preference is given to Berkeley students who can demonstrate in their application that they already have a faculty contact at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Applicants must submit the following materials:

A one-page application letter, including a 100-word (maximum) abstract of your research and indication of the duration of your stay

One letter of recommendation from a UC Berkeley faculty member; this letter should be sent to ies@berkeley.edu
