The Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program: Fostering a Community of Transatlantic Leaders

Over the past twenty years, the Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program has enabled over 300 young American professionals to acquire an in-depth understanding of the political, economic, and cultural environment of Germany and European Union. The nine-month program consists of three seminars and two work phases, during which fellows complete executive-level internships in major German institutions, including the Federal Government, the Federal Parliament, headquarters of private corporations, think-tanks, and media and cultural organizations. Seven months of German language training in the U.S. and Berlin are provided prior to the start of the program in September. Fellows receive a living stipend of EURO 1,800 per month, with additional funds available for spouses and children. Through their work experience and seminars taking place all over Europe, Bosch Fellows acquire invaluable professional experience and develop an enduring commitment to the transatlantic relationship.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens between the ages of 23 and 34 and, ideally, have completed a graduate degree prior to the beginning of the program. UCB Working Group Grants for Students in European Studies
The Institute of European Studies (IES) invites undergraduate and graduate students to form working groups to explore European topics under IES sponsorship. We envision such groups as forums for collaboration and exchange across the various European area studies programs and academic disciplines on campus. As such, they should provide opportunities for students to both explore a European issue or event in depth, and acquire new perspectives from fields outside their major or scholarly focus.

Examples of possible topics include but are not limited to: migration, religion, the environment, sports, the family, multiculturalism, and the EU. While we are interested in all proposals, we especially appreciate those which establish comparative perspectives looking at individual themes as they manifest themselves in the various countries comprising Europe, or interdisciplinary frameworks exploring the representation of European topics in cultural texts from such diverse fields as literature, film, psychology, political science, sociology, art history, mass media, economics, business, history, and music.

To apply for funding please submit the following to Beverly Crawford, IES Associate Director, 207 Moses Hall by November 1st, 2008:

  1. Description of the working group (1-2 pages): Proposed topic, areas and disciplines encompassed, a list of activities including a schedule of meetings and potential texts or cultural works to be studied, and the name and contact information of the group’s primary coordinator.
  2. Budget: IES can provide up to $1,750 for working group activities. Funds may be used for diverse purposes, including guest speakers, film rentals, book purchases, reader production, and refreshments. In your application please note the amount your group requires, and describe how it will be used. The primary coordinator of the Working Group must be affiliated with at least one UC Berkeley department, which will serve as the home department and will administer the funds awarded by the Institute of European Studies.

Deadline: November 1, 2008

Nominations Invited for Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights

The Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights is presented annually to honor a leading practitioner in health and human rights, and to help call attention to the vital links between health and human rights. The award program is supported by the Association François-Xavier Bagnoud, Doctors of the World, and the Global Health Council.

The award will be presented to a practitioner in health and human rights, be it an individual or organization. The award is a substantial cash prize and is intended to allow its recipients a measure of freedom to pursue their work in the area of global health and human rights.

In reviewing the nominees, the following criteria will be considered and evaluated: practical work in the field and in difficult circumstances; actual relevance to the linkage of health with human rights; predominant activities in developing countries and with marginalized people; evidence of serious and long-term commitment; potential of the award to strengthen nominees' work; potential for receipt of the award to raise the profile of the award itself; potential of funding to enhance visibility and public awareness of the issue or project the awardee is addressing; and potential for attracting additional resources toward resolution of the issue.

An effort is made to cast broadly for award candidates to ensure individuals and organizations working at the grassroots level are given the same attention and opportunities of those operating at the national or international level.

See the Global Health Council Web site for complete program details and the online nomination form. Additional RFPs in Health... And more RFPs in Human Services...

February 2009 Deadlines

IES & CGES (General) Predissertation Fellowships
Summer/Fall 2009

Fellowships for short-term (two to three months) predissertation research in Europe during summer/fall 2009 for graduate students working on modern European topics and enrolled at any UC campus. Graduate students often find that a first separate visit improves their chances of efficient and successful dissertation research abroad. This permits a network of academic support and contacts to be built up before the major stay. This Predissertation Research Program is designed to provide such opportunities and is not intended to be a supplement or substitute for regular dissertation support. Under normal circumstances, students receiving the grants will be expected to return to their home institution following the grant period for the purpose of defining and/or refining their dissertation project in anticipation of their subsequent dissertation research abroad. The Center is unable to support predissertation projects that are purely literary, philosophical, or theoretical in character. It also cannot support projects in early modern history outside the Central European field or those that deal exclusively with Russian history. Applicants should be in the process of preparing their dissertation proposals, and there should be a gap of at least one semester or two quarters between the completion of their predissertation fellowship and the beginning of their field work abroad. These fellowships of $3,000 each are expected to cover two or three months' research in Europe.
