IES extends beyond the borders of the academy and embraces the community. We collaborate with a broad network of government entities, businesses, and nonprofit organizations throughout California and the United States to host public programs on European topics. We also organize educational programs that serve California K-12 public school teachers and community colleges. All events and activities sponsored by IES are free and open to the public.

EU Center

With the support of a “Getting to Know Europe” grant, funded by the EU, the European Union Center sponsors outreach events for professionals and policymakers to raise awareness of the EU, its international role, and the value and significance of the transatlantic partnership.

K-14 Outreach

IES sponsors the work of the UC Berkeley Office of Resources for International and Area Studies (ORIAS). ORIAS supports professional and curricular development for K-12 and community college instructors through workshops and seminars, classroom resources, summer teacher training institutes, and an active speakers bureau.

We also support ORIAS working groups in partnership with the non-profit organization Humanities West and the California Social Science History Project.

IES has built and maintains collaborations with the Peralta Community College District (Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College, and Merritt College) to expand the study of less commonly taught European languages.
