IES is delighted to welcome our 2021-22 EU Fellow, Anni Hellman.

The EU Fellows Program enables staff from the EU Commission or Parliament to spend up to one year as a Visiting Scholar on the Berkeley campus. During the fellowship, scholars carry out research on a project related to their work, as well as undertake outreach activities, thus acting as "ambassadors" for the EU.

Anni Hellman is a deputy Head of Unit within the EU Commission Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology. She is a mathematician and a qualified actuary and a Fellow of the Actuarial Association of Finland and holds degrees in mathematics, actuarial sciences and computer sciences. Prior to her current role, Anni has worked in various managerial positions in the European Commission and its agencies.

In the European Commission, Anni’s unit (Media Convergence and Social Media) focuses on the challenges of social media, with two main strands of work: how to tackle the challenges of disinformation, and how to work towards ensuring the integrity of social media through a multidisciplinary approach.

In Berkeley, Anni will return to her mathematical roots to look into the challenges of artificial intelligence in general and algorithms in particular as well as the disinformation challenge from a mathematical perspective. Anni aims to combine her backgrounds in pure and actuarial mathematics, audit practices, and the current European legislative approach.
