Institute of European Studies Receives $2 Million plus in NRC and FLAS Grants for 2022-2025

The University of California, Berkeley Institute of European Studies has once again received the distinction of National Resource Center for Western Europe from the U.S. Department of Education.

After a highly competitive review process, the U.S. Department of Education has again awarded the University of California, Berkeley the status of National Resource Center on Western Europe. The UC Berkeley Institute of European Studies has also received funding for Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships in Western European Languages, critical for undergraduates and graduates enrolled in language and area studies courses on campus and in programs abroad. These awards have a value of  $2million plus for 2022-2025.

As the transatlantic relationship between the US and Europe makes news headlines once more, students and faculty will be able to  use this funding to deepen their expertise and cultural fluency. NRC and FLAS funding impacts the campus community and beyond in several tangible ways such as:

  • Academic Year and Summer Fellowships for Berkeley undergraduates and graduate students taking language and area studies courses on campus or abroad.

  • New graduate workshops on careers outside of the higher education sector.

  • New undergraduate workshops on careers in areas of national need, including non-profits, government and industry

  • Faculty-led public lectures and research workshops addressing contemporary and historical topics in European Studies, including the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Europe and the transatlantic military alliance, energy policies and climate change, health, migration, and the legacy of colonialism

  • Brussels study tour travel stipends for K-14 educators at minority serving institutions and community colleges

  • Support to departments for new language courses including Advanced Turkish, Modern Irish, and Modern Greek.

  • Purchasing and cataloging of new digital materials in Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs) by UC Berkeley Libraries 

  • Creation of new professional development offerings on Climate Change and Area Studies for high school teachers and community college faculty by the ORIAS outreach program

  • Travel awards for language lecturers to improve training and share Berkeley best practices in teaching
