IES Director Professor Mia Fuller was invited to lead two panels at the 2026 Turin International Book Fair, held in Turin, Italy, from 14–18 May. The fair is Italy’s largest book trade event and one of the largest book fairs in Europe, attracting over 200 visitors and featuring prominent international guests, including U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, who participated in a public dialogue emphasizing the importance of U.S.–Europe alliances.
Professor Fuller’s first appearance was on a panel hosted by the magazine Internazionale examining the legacies of Italian imperialism. She moderated a discussion with journalist Angelo Boccato and author Igiaba Scego, exploring the historical and contemporary impacts of Italy’s colonial past.
The second panel focused on Professor Fuller’s 2025 book, Una modernità apparente. L'architettura coloniale italiana dal Mediterraneo all'Africa Orientale. Presented to a broad public audience, the event generated significant interest. 
The discussion featured comments from distinguished panelists, including Francesco Cassata, historian of science at the University of Genoa and founding member of the Centre for the History of Racism and Anti-Racism in Modern Italy (CENTRA), who provided an overview of the book; Cecilia Palombelli, head of Viella Editrice; and author and public intellectual Igiaba Scego. Scego engaged Professor Fuller in conversation about her research trajectory, the origins of her interest in Italian colonial architecture, and the differences between the new Italian edition and the original English-language publication, Moderns Abroad: Architecture, Cities, and Italian Imperialism (Routledge, 2007).
Professor Fuller’s participation contributed to important public discussions on Italian colonial history, architecture, memory, and their continuing relevance in contemporary society.
