Modern Greek and the Politics of Language (MELC 190A)

New Course from the Modern Greek and Hellenic Studies Program starting in Spring Semester 2026!

Modern Greek and the Politics of Language (MELC 190A),  examines how features of Modern Greek-both standard and non-standard varieties-serve as sites of debate and as tools for advancing political and cultural agendas. Through a sociolinguistic lens, we will analyze a wide range of materials, including academic, literary texts, art, mass and social media. Students will explore how language reflects and shapes social and political change across regions where Modern Greek is spoken (Greece, Cyprus, Albania, Turkey, and beyond).

All are welcome, no prior knowledge of Greek or of Linguistics required.

Tuesdays & Thursdays 2-3:30pm
