Gerald D. and Norma Feldman Lecture: The Ruse of Retirement

This year’s Feldman Lecture speaker was Jonathan Zatlin, Associate Professor of History at Boston University and former PhD student of Professor Feldman. His lecture, entitled “The Ruse of Retirement: Eichmann, Theresienstadt, and the Elderly,” highlighted the ways in which Eichmann used retirement to take advantage of elderly Jewish populations during the Nazi regime.

On October 26, IES organized the visit of Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland, to the Berkeley campus. During his keynote address President Higgins encouraged students to take responsibility to share the lessons and skills they learn at one of the world’s top public research universities to tackle the worsening human rights problems of world hunger and poverty.

IES hosted a panel discussion entitled “Turkey: Facing Challenges in Multiple Contexts (Domestic, Regional, European, and Global).” The panel consisted of professors from Turkey’s leading universities, namely the Middle Eastern Technical University (METU) and Yasar University.

IES welcomed Professor William Phelan, who teaches at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Phelan presented his latest book In Place of Inter-State Retaliation (OUP, 2015) about the Political Power of the European Court of Justice. In his presentation, Phelan put forth a new explanation of the European Court of Justice’s (ECJ) political power.

Lecture by Winfried Kretschmann, Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg

IES had the honor of welcoming Winfried Kretschmann. Kretschmann is an important figure in German politics and the ecological movement. He is the current Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg, Germany's first 'Bundesland' to be led by a member of the Green Party. As an important member of the Green movement in Europe, he has become a symbol for decisive changes in the adoption of ecological principles.

Lecture by the Greek Former Minister of Finance

IES welcomed Gikas A. Hardouvelis to campus. Mr. Hardouvelis holds a Ph.D. in Economics from UC Berkeley and was the Minister of Finance (June 2014 – 27 January 2015) in the Greek government under Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. As Greece’s last Minister of Finance before the Syriza-led government under Alexis Tsipras, Mr. Hardouvelis didn’t hide his concern over the radical change in policy in his country.

IES hosted a conference entitled “Bridging the Atlantic Abyss: Continental Platform Expansion, Research and Development of Ocean Based Technologies,” during which Portugal’s involvement in ocean politics was discussed. The Institute was pleased to welcome Portugal’s Secretary of State of the Sea, Professor Manuel Pinto de Abreu, as the keynote speaker.

German Bundestag Member Jürgen Hardt visited the Institute for European Studies to give a talk about Germany’s transatlantic relationship to the US. In his talk Mr. Hardt, the coordinator of transatlantic German-American relations, highlighted the importance of the European-American friendship in today’s international order.
