In 1991, Chancellor Kohl personally inaugurated the Center for German and European Studies at UC Berkeley, gave the convocation address and received the Berkeley Medal. This event underscored the importance of European Studies on the West Coast and laid the foundation for today’s Institute of European Studies. As a tribute to the late Chancellor, IES established the Helmut Kohl Award in support of Berkeley graduate students enrolled in the Designated Emphasis in European Studies.
This award is in the amount of $2,000 and is open to students at UC Berkeley enrolled in the Designated Emphasis in European Studies, who are writing their dissertations on topics related to German and European Studies. Topics should focus on political, historical, economic, social, cultural, and intellectual issues, or public policy in contemporary Europe. The fellowship may be used to supplement external grants. Please use our online application form to apply for this grant. The deadline for submitting applications is February 1. For additional information, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
