Berkeley-Viadrina Travel Grant (graduates)

The European University Viadrina, a partner university of IES, is pleased to offer grants for short-term (max. 3 months) research stays for UC Berkeley graduate students in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

European University Viadrina is located on the German-Polish border in Frankfurt (Oder), near Berlin. The university stands out in Germany for its multidisciplinary research focus on the political, economic, social and cultural aspects of the transformation processes in Central and Eastern Europe, history and literature in the region, international migration, and the changing role of borders and orders -  all within the framework of an international research network covering both the EU and the US.

Preference will be given to Berkeley candidates who can provide written evidence (e-mail or letter) that they have a faculty supervisor at Viadrina University. Interested applicants may contact international program coordinator Prof. Timm Beichelt ( for help in identifying a faculty supervisor.

Required Documents:
• Application form (Please download form on VIP website)
• Proof of completed university degree
• Curriculum Vitae, with publications list if applicable
• Proof of enrollment in a doctoral program at the home university
• Letter of invitation by a professor of the European University Viadrina (See VIP website for more information)
• Written assessment by a supervisor of the home university (Please download form on VIP website)
• Summary of the PhD project, incl. table of contents and working plan schedule (max. 5 pages)
• Letter of motivation (max. 3 pages): Please state your motivation for the research stay at the European University Viadrina and present the academic activities you intend to do while being at the Viadrina. Please also describe to what extent the stay will enrich your research project and international networking.
• Detailed schedule of planned research stay at the European University Viadrina
