IES Graduate Fellowships
The Institute of European Studies (
IES)
is home to the leading concentration of teachers and researchers
on Europe in the western United States. As UC Berkeley's focal
point for the study of Europe, IES unites disciplines and creates
new understandings of issues related to Europe and its constituent
nations.
The Institute houses the Center for German Studies (
CGES),
France-Berkeley Fund (
FBF), Portuguese
Studies Program (
PSP), and the
National Resource Center for Western European Studies (
NRCWES).
Programs focused on the study of
France,
Spain,
Italy,
and
Finland round out the Institute's
offerings. Together, our centers and programs have contributed
to Berkeley's reputation as one of the finest research and instructional
institutions in the world.

IES offers unparalleled pre-dissertation support to graduate students
who are ready to write their proposals. Students who are awarded
these prestigious fellowships may apply them toward pre-dissertation
travel and research expenses. A preliminary trip gives students
the freedom they need to prepare themselves for field or archival
research. A two- to three-month stay ensures that students develop
a strong network of contacts, explore a wide variety of host institutions,
and build lasting relationships within the greatest research programs
Europe has to offer. Students emerge from these trips more focused
and confident about crafting their dissertation proposals.
We need your support to keep these programs alive!
Your
generous donation will ensure that IES graduate students,
both current and future, will have all the resources they need
at their disposal.
