Between Regionalism
and Globalism: European Union Transregional Strategies in the New
Economy
Vinod Aggarwal of UC Berkeley, Project Leader
The group will examine the European Union's economic relations
with other regional groupings. His research group looks at whether "transregionalism"-the
pursuit of formalized commercial relationships between two distinct
regions-will emerge as a next-best strategy for states and firms.
In particular, the group explores two broad, potential explanations
for the development of transregional agreements: the role of systemic
power balancing as a driving force versus the political struggle
between "new economy" and old economy actors. Researchers
collaborating in this project met in the Fall of 2001 to present
preliminary findings.
A conference will be held in the Spring of 2002 to present work
in progress; the project is scheduled to conclude with a final
conference
in the Spring of 2003. |
