Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

The NRC at the Institute of European Studies has provided support to the Annual Claremont-UC Research Conference on the European Union since its inception in 2003. The primary purpose of this conference is to enhance undergraduate student understanding of the European Union and US-relations, foster inter-campus exchange and collaboration, and recognize excellent work achieved by students. In addition, the conference enables students to interact with each other as well as faculty experts, and thus fosters intercampus and international cooperation.

The 9th annual conference was held at Scripps College on April 7-8, 2011.

Three students from UC Berkeley participated in the event with the following papers:

“Cohabitation and Fertility in the European Union,” by Margarita Chudnovskaya

“Kadi v. Commission: a Case Study of the Development of a Rights-Based Jurisprudence for the European Court of Justice,” by Alisa Shekhtman

“An Ever Closer Union: The Common Security and Defense Policy in the Last Frontier of European Integration,”
by Dan Stepanicich

In addition, the co-directors of UC Berkeley’s EU Center served as faculty discussants at two conference sessions. IES Associate Director Beverly Crawford reviewed presentations in a panel titled “Justice and Democracy” (session 11), and ISEEES Executive Director Mr. Pennington discussed papers exploring “Politics in Eastern Europe” (session 10).

The European Union Center of Excellence, which IES manages together with the Institute of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies (ISEEES), also provides authors of the top three conference papers with a four-day study tour to EU institutions in Brussels. The winners of the 2011 travel awards were Amelia Adams of Brigham Young University, Maya Swisa of the University of Southern California, and Melike Basturk of Pitzer College.
