Graduate Assistantships at the University of Califrnia Study Center in Paris, France

The University of California Education Abroad Program seeks applicants for graduate
assistantship positions at its Study Center in Paris. These positions involve crucial roles
in the effective operation of the undergraduate program at the Center, and will provide successful
applicants with the opportunity to pursue thesis research in Paris.
Two GSI fellowships are available from UCB in Fall 2003 and Spring 2004, one in the Humanities,
the other in the Social Sciences.
The position is half-time, and carries the normal graduate assistant stipend, including fee
remission and health coverage, from the applicant's home campus. In addition, EAP will provide
round-trip travel and a small removal allowance. Applicants will be responsible for their own
housing in Paris, as well as any visa or other pre-departure requirements and costs.
Successful applicants will be expected to work twenty hours a week for the program and have
the remaining time free to work on their research. Responsibilities will vary for the eight different
positions, but include one of the following:
- Teaching a section of first or second-year French
- Providing tutorials or sections for the courses in the program taught by French instructors
- Mentoring undergraduates to assure their cultural and social integration, and to assist them
in taking advantage of the opportunities offered to students in the city of Paris, including
designing and implementing course-related cultural activities
- Acting as resident assistant in student dormitory
- Acting as academic assistant to the program director
- Web manager and librarian in charge of maintaining the UC
Paris Study Center webpage and the library.
Applicants seeking appointments in the fall must be available to begin their positions in Paris on or about
August 15, 2002, and will be required to participate fully in the following schedule of the Paris Center
program.
- August 20: arrival of students
- August 21-24: student orientations
- August 25-September 12: intensive language and culture program
- September 15-December 13: fall semester courses
- December 15-17: final exams
Applicants seeking appointments in the spring must be available between January 10 and May 15.
Eligibility
Applicants must be active graduate students at UC Berkeley and must be advanced to candidacy by the
start of the program. They must be fluent in French, familiar with the city of Paris, and have teaching,
mentoring, and/or administrative experience.
