Open to Faculty from the Social Sciences at all UC Campuses
DEADLINE: Applications accepted through February
1
The Institute of European Studies, University of California, Berkeley, and the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation are pleased to announce a competition for a short-term Research Grant for faculty in the social sciences and humanities whose work focuses on political economy, broadly defined. Although all applications will be considered, projects with practical importance for economic, political and social issues relevant to Austria and California and more broadly to Europe and the United States are particularly encouraged. This award will amount to $5,000 — for visits of up to one month. Successful applicants will receive a temporary affiliation with the host institution in Vienna.
The Berkeley-Austria Fund (BAF) was established in 2003
by the University of California and University of Vienna
with support from the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation,
to support scholarly collaboration and exchanges of social
scientists between Berkeley and Vienna. The Fund is established
to encourage and support original research of the highest
quality and new collaborations. Financial support will
be provided for California scholars seeking to visit Vienna
and Austrian scholars seeking to visit California. These
visits will be short-term, typically visits of up to one
month.
For purposes of this program, the social sciences are
defined broadly. However, the Fund seeks especially to
encourage projects with practical importance for economic,
political and social issues relevant to Austria and California
and, more broadly, to Europe and the United States. In
addition, the Fund seeks especially to support projects
involving younger scholars, and projects that involve or
might lead to collaboration between Californian and Austrian
researchers. The Fund does not pay for conferences and
workshops, for release time for faculty, or for the purchase
of equipment, except in rare exceptions.
Faculty applying to this program must be tenured or tenure
track.
The application deadline for this program is February
1, for visits to take place in the Spring
and Fall semesters of the same calendar year (including
the Summer).
The Executive Committee will meet in February to review
applications. Awards will be announced by early March.
Proposals will be accepted at any time but all proposals
must be received at the following address by February
