Professor
Kavanagh works
in the areas of 18th-century literature and culture, film studies,
narrative, and the cultural history of gambling. His publications
include The Vacant Mirror: A Study of Mimesis Through Diderot's
Jacques le fataliste (1972), Writing the Truth: Authority
and Desire in Rousseau (1987), The Limits of Theory (1989),
Enlightenment and the Shadows of Chance (1993), Chance,
Culture, and the Literary Text (1994), and Esthetics of the
Moment (1997). He is currently working on a book-length study
of the representation of chance and gambling within French culture
from the Middle Ages to the present.
