Roger Hahn

Professor of History

Professor Hahn is currently working on several parallel topics, chief among them the biography of the scientist and statesman Pierre Simon Laplace (1749-1827). He is also investigating the ideological origins of the Encyclopédie as they developed in the 1720s with the creation of the Société des Arts; and the large set of public paying lectures offered to Parisian audiences before the Revolution. His publications include, The Anatomy of a Scientific Institution. The Paris Academy of Sciences (1666-1803); "Lavoisier et ses Collaborateurs: Une Équipe au Travail," II y a 200 Ans Lavoisier (1995); and "A Scientist Responds to his Skeptical Crisis: Laplace's Philosophy of Science," The Skeptical Tradition Around 1800 (1998).
