In these difficult economic times, IES counts on donor support more than ever to help fund our scholarships and to help us secure
stable funding for new, innovative initiatives bringing, for example, prominent
European authors and creators (artists, public intellectuals, filmmakers,
etc.) to Berkeley for public lectures, seminars, and conferences. Gifts can
be made in the form of cash, securities, real estate, or pledges. They can
also be left to IES from one's estate through a will or trust. All gifts also
count towards UC Berkeley's overall fundraising goals, keeping it competitive
with the very best universities worldwide. Won't you consider a gift today?

Enhanced global security is a goal that we all share, whether as men or women, Americans or Europeans. Where we sometimes differ is over what we mean by “security” and how it is best enhanced. -- Margot Wallström
On September 30, 2009, the European Union Center of Excellence at UC Berkeley was inaugurated with a public lecture by Vice-President of the European Commission, Margot Wallström. Vice-President Wallström began her talk with an overview of the EU’s role on the world stage, noting that although the “soft power” approach it takes to pressing international issues attracts fewer headlines than those of other more forceful world actors, its contributions to global change are significant nonetheless. These include providing approximately one fifth of the world’s trade in goods, a quarter of the world’s trade in services, one third of the world’s GDP, and one half of worldwide development aid. IES works diligently to bring the insights of its research to school teachers throughout the state of California.
In Spring 2007 IES launched a new project that involves adapting proceedings from one of its yearly conferences into curricular resource materials for K-14 educators. This project serves diverse purposes: 1) It helps bridge between cutting edge academic research and public school curricula. 2) It entails hiring a graduate student to work together with IES’ outreach coordinator, thus providing an opportunity for UC Berkeley students to gain experience applying their scholarly training in realms outside of academia. 3) Each year Read

With financial support from Title VI funds, IES conducts outreach activities that enhance the Institute’s visibility on campus and in the local community. In addition to holding hundreds of talks and conferences at Cal, IES partially funds the work of ORIAS (Office of Resources for International and Area Studies). ORIAS’ mission is to develop and strengthen ties between IES and other Berkeley NRCs and K-14 schools and educators. Among the resources available from ORIAS are curriculum materials, web resource lists, guest speakers , and electronic mentors. Some of our activities over the last year include the following:
The 2008 ORIAS World History Summer Institute for Educators – “Pestilence and Public Health”
That future viruses, plagues, and mysterious afflictions now rival monsters and aliens in horror movies throughout the world – an indication of their prominence in public imagination – reflects both the current threat of infectious disease and our increasing awareness of its historical role. The 2008 ORIAS World History Summer Institute for Educators entitled “Pestilence and Public Health,” explored the causes and consequences of epidemic disease in world history. Read more ...

Berkeley is very pleased to have been chosen to establish an EU Center of Excellence, one of a dozen in North America and another dozen worldwide. A joint effort of the Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies and the Institute of European Studies at Cal , the EU Center is funded for three years with a € 300,000 grant from the European Commission in partnership with these Institutes and is working in cooperation with the School of Public Health, the Institute of Governmental Studies, the Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy, and the Boalt Hall School of Law. With the creation of this EU Center of Excellence, UC Berkeley will play a vital role in promoting a deeper understanding of the European Union and raise the level of dialogue and discourse on transatlantic relations throughout the State of California.
The EU Center is co-directed by Beverly Crawford, associate director of the Institute of European Studies, and by Jeff Pennington, executive director of the Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies. Ms. Noga Wizansky serves as the Center's assistant director.

Berkeley and the Portuguese Studies Program are proud to embark on the fourth year of their highly successful six-week Summer-in-Portugal study program. This course aims to provide continuity to the study of Portuguese language and culture available at the UC Berkeley, and to enhance the students’ awareness of Portuguese culture through direct contact with Portuguese educational and cultural institutions. Additionally, the course leads the students through a comprehensive trajectory that establishes the historical, cultural, economic and political links between Portugal, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, particularly South America.
