Jeroen (pronounced YER-on) Dewulf is the Queen Beatrix Professor of Dutch and the Director of the Dutch Studies Program (part of the German Department) here at UC Berkeley. A Netherlands native, he has worked tirelessly to raise the profile of Europe’s “smaller languages” in conjunction with IES. For instance, through his initiative, a European Language Offerings site was established to keep newer students especially, who are less familiar with the myriad offerings and departments at UC Berkeley, apprised of language courses ranging from Hungarian to Irish. Through the organization of the Jewish Studies Program with support from the Institute of European Studies and the EU Center for Excellence, UC Berkeley hosted her first ever Conference on Romani Studies in November 2011. Hailing from Wellington and Stockholm, two visiting scholars at IES in Spring 2012 are typical of the breadth and quality of scholarship fostered here by the Institute. John Leslie received his PhD from the UC Berkeley Political Science Department in 2002. One of the first graduate students funded by the Center for German and European Studies at IES, he received a UC Faculty Fellowship at UC Irvine and then spent two years at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey before joining the staff of Victoria University of Wellington, NZ.

Deolinda Adão, Associate Director of the Portuguese Studies Program at IES, received a high honor in April when she was presented with the Gold Medal of Merit from the Portuguese Foreign Ministry for her years of service fostering Portuguese culture. Prof. Adão, who received her PhD from Berkeley and also teaches Portuguese and Spanish at San Jose State University and Berkeley City College, has worked tirelessly on Luso-American research topics and within the community. In April IES’ Center for British Studies hosted Burdens, an international conference on post-World War II British history. Generously sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the program brought together many of the most talented and influential historians working in this newly-emerging field of study.
