Finland is one of the lucky cultures which claims the heritage of an outstanding epic. After some 800 years of rule by the Swedish Empire, Finland was taken over by Russia in the early 19th century, but with considerably autonomy for a time. This allowed the Finnish sense of self and nationalist yearnings to flourish. Towards the turn of the 20th century, an impetus to russify the Russian Imperial territories gained ground, which only added urgency to Finnish yearnings for independence, fostered in part by the stressing of cultural distinctiveness. Curated by Hamish Bowles, European editor-at-large of Vogue, this exhibition features nearly 120 haute couture garments, hats, and headdresses designed by Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895–1972). The exhibition illustrates Balenciaga’s expansive creative vision, which incorporated references to Spanish art, bullfighting, dance, regional costume, and the pageantry of the royal court and religious ceremonies.

The San Francisco Silent Film Festival takes place at the Castro Theatre twice each year. It shows new prints of restored classic films which sparkle in the historic setting, while accompanied by live music and introduced by scholars and preservationists.
