Program UpdateCenter for British Studies
The Center for British Studies will be co-hosting several talks this semester, including lectures by Sir Keith Thomas (a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and former President of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, whose books include Religion and the Decline of Magic, Man and the Natural World, and The Oxford Book of Work); Professor Stefan Collini (Professor of Intellectual History and English Literature at Cambridge); and John Beattie (University Professor Emeritus of History and Criminology, University of Toronto). For this Spring semester of 2004, the Center has already hosted a History Workshop (Jan. 16-17) for British historians in California; and will host the Pacific Coast Conference on British Studies (PCCBS) on March 26-28. The Jan. 16-17 workshop was an informal gathering of historians -- the purpose to get better acquainted with each other and discuss the field of British history from a Californian perspective. The PCCBS is a 3-day conference on British Studies with scholars (fields: history, literature, law, political science, etc.) from not only the west coast but also from all over the US and abroad. James Vernon is the Program Committee Chair and Julie Taddeo is in charge of local arrangements.
