Carla Hesse

Dean of Social Sciences and Peder Sather Professor of History

Carla Hesse is the Dean of Social Sciences as well as a Peder Sather Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley. She is fluent in French, proficient in German, and researches Early Modern Europe, 16th-20th century France, and European Intellectual History in the 17th-20th centuries.

Professor Hesse was awarded the Aby Warburg Prize in 2007, which is given to scholars who have distinguished themselves in the arts, culture, and humanities. She has also written two books: The Other Enlightenment: How French Women Became Modern and Publishing and Cultural Politics in Revolutionary Paris, 1789-1810.
