On Thursday, October 30th, IES held its annual reception, the Fall
Festival. The event took place in the Toll Room of the Alumni House
from 4-6pm. Catered by Mediterraneo, the food was delicious. A
small
jazz combo also played for the gathering. Around five o'clock,
guests gathered round as IES Assistant
Margarita
Maldonado welcomed everyone and introduced the subsequent
international poem reading, featuring all languages of
IES-sponsored
country
programs. IES staff readers were:
Sirpa Tuomainen (Finnish),
Heidi
Sutton (Italian),
Julie Taddeo (English),
Gia
White-Forbes (Spanish),
Beverly Crawford (German),
Michelle Bertho (French),
and
Deolinda
Adao (Portuguese). Guests were asked to guess which poem
was being read aloud, and a prize
was given to
Joanne Sandstrom of the Institute
of East Asian Studies, for correctly guessing that the poem was
none other than Edgar
Allen Poe's "The Raven." Another prize was given to
Richard
Takahashi of the Laurence Berkeley Lab, for giving the
closest guesstimate for the IES Candy Count. After the poem reading,
IES Director
Gerald D. Feldman gave a lovely speech
and introduced everyone to the
IES
staff members.
Overall, there was a great turnout for this
event and everyone seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.
One guest even commented that this was the best reception he'd
been
to in
the four years he's worked here at Cal! If you missed it this year,
be sure to check this website next October for information about
the next Fall Festival in 2004.
