IES has strong ties to business and policy communities through the Bellagio Group of G-10, deputy finance ministers and central bank governors, under the direction of former IES Director and current Exec. Committee member Barry Eichengreen. IES also reaches the business community with the ongoing workshop on “Regulating Consumer Safety and Risk” in which business practitioners, scholars, and public officials explore the politics of risk regulation in Europe and the US. The Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry (BCGC) at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health has become a center of expertise and a regional resource on EU environmental and chemical regulation policies. It provides frequent counsel to policy makers, business professionals, and community organizations in California and the US.
IES conducts outreach activities that enhance the Institute’s visibility on campus and in the local community. Every semester, IES and its constituent centers organize numerous talks and conferences, over 200 events annually, which are always open to the public. IES publicizes extensively through targeted mailing lists, an e-mail listserve, website, posters, flyers, local print and broadcast media, consulates, and student groups. IES’ Portuguese Studies Program sponsors a bi-monthly program on the Portuguese Radio Network addressing issues related to Portugal and the world. Several IES events receive extensive media coverage in other ways. Notable examples include IES events in response to the Ukraine crisis, one with UC Berkeley professor Yuriy Gorodnichenko, whose talk was featured on the UCB News Center, and the second, a public panel which included UC Berkeley professor Edward Walker, who gave an interview on the crisis with CNN after the event. IES director Jeroen Dewulf and IES Associate Director Beverly Crawford have been interviewed on various issues affecting Europe. The IES and European Union Center newsletters are posted on the IES’ website which attracts some 200,000 visits monthly, and distributed electronically. IES provides links on its website, Twitter and Facebook page to its research, outreach and grant activities. For an overview of past events, please go to the Annual Report.
